How to Find Spirituality in the Workplace
Most of you reading this probably work outside the home. Are you happy with the work you are doing? Does your work actually heal your soul? Do you like the people at your work? Did you ever stop to consider that your workplace may provide the PERFECT opportunity for you to grow spiritually? Many people encounter difficulties at work. These challenges can
actually help us evolve into more peaceful and happy human beings. If you are reading this, perhaps YOU are unhappy at work and are looking for some ways to improve your situation.
Take an inventory of your current situation - Make a list of the things you LIKE about your job and then the things you DON’T LIKE. Spend lots of time on this. Leave it and then go back to reflect. Be honest with yourself. If your DON’T LIKE list is longer than your LIKE list, maybe you are in the wrong job. The article on Finding the Perfect Job
may be helpful. However, if your LIKE list is longer, the next
step may help you with your unhappiness.
Determine how YOU are contributing to the problem - Most people look outside themselves for why things are going wrong. It is hard to face the fact that we create our own problems by the way we look at things. An example of this
may be that there is one co-worker who drives you crazy. Ask yourself why? The truth is, the thing we dislike in another person, we also have inside ourselves. Try to think of this person in a different way. Instead of dwelling on the negative aspects, try to look at him or her with compassion. Say to yourself that they are doing the best that they can with what they know now.
Avoid negative situations - We tend to feel guilty if we walk away from certain people who challenge us, but this is exactly what you should do to keep yourself positive. It really is not your job to deal with other people’s problems. A good line to use is “I hope that works out for you,” and then walk away. Some people have very low energy. It is best to avoid these people as much as possible. If you have to confront
someone, state you case calmly.
Take a break - Sometimes we can’t avoid a difficult situation at work. When you feel overwhelmed, take a break, go for a walk or even go into a bathroom stall and meditate or pray for a couple of minutes. This is extremely helpful in balancing your body.
Maintain your health - Be sure to get plenty of rest, keep your body hydrated, eat healthy foods and get regular exercise which should include yoga. Meditating for at least 10 minutes in the morning and visualizing white light around you before going to work can be very helpful as well.
Talk to a trusted friend - Find someone to talk to about your feelings. This could be with a co-worker, spouse/partner, friend or professional therapist. Any one
of these ways could be very healing and provide wonderful therapy as long as you are able to be open and honest about your feelings. Naturally, you would have to abide by any code of ethics your company adheres to. However, everyone has the freedom to process feelings and get them out. Stuffing, only makes situations worse in the end. If you have no one to talk to, try journaling.
Challenging workplaces are part of every person’s life. As difficult as it is to admit, if we are unhappy at work, at some level, we are choosing this behavior. By looking honestly within, with wisdom, we can start to change the way we think about our situation. When we change for the better, so does everyone around us.
