Living With The Agreements
Never before have I come across anything that has affected my life more than the following book by Don Miguel Ruz called the The Four Agreements. These agreements are simple to read about, but difficult to achieve. However, with intention and practice they can be integrated into your life. When this book found me, I fell in love with it! The words rang true for me. I immediately started implementing the ideas. They have definitely provided a heightened sense of enlightened spirituality into my life’s journey. My life feels God-filled. I pray for the same for you.
- Be impeccable with your word - The word “impeccable” means without sin. Therefore, every word and every thought that you have should enhance life, not deplete it. This follows the law of attraction that says, whatever you give out, you get back. If you give out negativity toward others through your words or thoughts, it will come back to you ten-fold!! This is a universal law. Therefore, by taking responsibility for your thoughts and words, you have the power to create your reality, either positively or negatively. It seems so simple, but it is actually very difficult. We have been so conditioned to gossip and judge others ( and ourselves!). It takes great effort to work at changing our thought patterns and therefore our words. However, if we begin this new way of thinking, slowly, over time, our whole life will change, in very wonderful ways. In fact, most of our problems will simply disappear with this one act!
- Don’t take ANYTHING personally - This is a VERY difficult thing to do, but very important, in order to completely eradicate the negativity we create for ourselves. Pause for a moment and think about all the times throughout the day that you take things personally. I was amazed as I went through this exercise, how much I caught myself doing this very thing. It was freeing to practice not taking anything personally. Eventually, over time, I was finding that I no longer felt attached to anything. An example of this was when my children moved away. There would have been a time when I would have cried for days about the fact that they were leaving me!! Now, of course, I am sad, and at times there will be tears because I miss them…but I no longer take it personally. This is a huge difference on how I look at the situation. It softens me on the inside, and it continues the love in my relationships.
- Never assume - This is a common practice of most human beings. We make assumptions about everything that happens. Instead of asking questions and getting the facts, we prefer to make things up in our own minds. This is because we don’t have the courage to face our fears by confronting others when there is a problem. This leads to confusion. It is much better to live with clarity. It creates more peace between people. Seek to understand first, then speak your truth lovingly.
- Do your best - This is the one thing which connects the other three and makes it all work. Whenever we start something new in our lives, we expect perfection right away from ourselves. When we can’t be perfect ( and none of us are!), we give up. Instead of thinking “perfection”, shift your thinking to “I will do my best”. From day to day, this will look different, but as long as you can say that you are doing your best, it will be good enough for that day. Especially at the beginning of this life change, there will be many times when the old habits creep up. With self-love, you acknowledge your thoughts and commit to change, every day.
These four spiritual laws can be highly effective in creating the positive life that you desire. Take the 30 day challenge! Put these four laws in the forefront of all your thoughts and you will soon create your heaven on earth. I hope that you experience this for yourself. Remember, it takes faith to keep going when things seem difficult. However, our souls yearn for spiritual evolution; for a more God centered life. These agreements will show the Way!
